Jõgeva County - the Garden of Estonia

Jõgevamaa food producers, cafes and restaurants ensure that ingredients from the picturesque slopes of Vooremaa, the flat fields of Põltsamaa, and the waters of Lake Peipus make their way onto your plates. Thanks to Jõgeva plant breeders, we can also consider ourselves the cradle of Estonian food. Come join us on a journey of flavors through the county!

Discover the food culture of Jõgevamaa

The food of Jõgevamaa is as colorful as a patchwork quilt. Here, the agricultural regions of Põltsamaa and Jõgeva meet the Peipsi lakeshore, which specializes in fishing and vegetable growing, and where different cultures and traditions intersect. If we were to pick something special and characteristic from the older food heritage of this area, it would include a wide variety of soups, small barley breads, many different pies with various fillings, grated potato pie and certainly boiled egg butter. The legendary potato 'Jõgeva Yellow', the tall garden pea 'Aamisepp', and the high-yield tomato 'Malle' all originate from Jõgeva. The Peipsi cucumber, which brought wealth to the region and was widely cultivated in the second half of the 20th century, has now become more a tourism product.
